Abstract

Investigations on the development of conidiomata in Pestalotiopsis rhododendri (Saccardo) Guba were done by using light and Transmission electron microscopes. Light microscopic studies showed the presence of non-ostiolate, pycnidial conidiomata in culture. Acervular conidiomata are produced normally by species of Pestalotiopsis on leaves. The other interesting observation during the study was the ultrastructure of the conidial wall in the coloured cells as well as the basal and apical hyaline cells with the appendages. Pestalotiopsis rhododendri resembles P. uvicola in the development of conidiomata. The first time report of the various stages of development of conidiomata in Pestalotiopsis rhododendri will be useful in fungal systematic studies.

Abstract

This article presents results of an analysis of higher education and research scenario in ten state universities of India during 2000 to 2006. Calcutta University ranked first in terms of published research articles, on an average 664 articles in a year in peer reviewed national and international journals. Similarly Madras, Panjab, Rajasthan, Mysore, Gauhati, Pune, Mumbai, Patna and Sikkim Manipal Universities published 600, 582, 538, 328.33, 221, 184.33, 112.5, 47 and 5 articles respectively. The ratio of number of faculty to research publication varied from 1:0.05 to 1:1.9 in the selected universities. University of Madras, Panjab, Rajasthan and Calcutta have ratio more than 1:1. University of Madras received the maximum research funds of 41.46 crore rupees and ranked first among the selected ten universities. Considering the overall performance of universities in our analysis, Calcutta University and Madras University captured the first two places respectively.

Abstract

Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid pigment extensively found in living organisms. Though Astaxanthin is a carotenoid compound, unlike β-carotene (a vitamin A precursor), cannot be converted to vitamin A. Astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant,with other biological effects protects cell membranes from harmful damage in the body. Studies suggest Astaxanthin may be effective in treating diseases, including cardiovascular, immune disorders, tumor, diabetes, neurodegenerative conditions and inflammatory conditions. Recent studies on Astaxanthin have shown enhancing immune response and decreasing DNA damage in humans. Astaxanthin is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier in mammals.

Abstract

Organic farming is the form of crop growing that relies on techniques like crop rotation, green compost, manure and biological pest control. This study was an initial attempt to know the status of organic farming in pesticide use predominant 28 districts in 12 Indian states. Doctors, pesticide vendors and agricultural officers of regions were interviewed to study the status of organic farming in the selected areas. Data were collected through pre-tested schedules by trained field investigators. A total of 1577 samples from 290 randomly selected villages were keyed in to Visual Basic front end in MS Access data base. In this study only 3% of the respondents across the country reported that they had practiced organic farming only, whereas 51% of respondents practiced chemical farming and 46% of respondents had taken up both organic and chemical farming. Appropriate research and extension services need to be developed to make available to farmers all the relevant information on organic farming.

Abstract

There are myriad innovations that have been part of agricultural transformation in India. This paper discusses various innovations and technological breakthroughs that took place in Indian agriculture during the British period and afterwards. Some of the innovations occurred inadvertently that are believed to have had higher impact on food production and livelihood security. Abstract

Considering growing demand of higher capacity and high speed wireless applications, there is need of a promising data transmission technique which can provide us these benefits along with good quality of service. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the technique which achieves these benefits. But due to multipath fading, it is sensitive to frequency offset caused by Doppler Effect. This frequency offset causes Inter carrier Interference (ICI) and degrades the performance of the system. The side lobes of OFDM signal are main sources of ICI caused by frequency offset. Researchers have invented many techniques to mitigate this ICI by suppressing side lobes. In this paper, we have reviewed these existing methods of side lobe suppression and by comparing their results commented on good techniques that can be helpful for achieving better side lobe suppression.

Abstract

The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architecture has been demonstrated to be an effective means to boost the capacity of wireless communication systems, and has evolved to become an inherent component of various wireless standards, including the next-generation cellular systems 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), Long Term Evolution (LTE), LTE advanced and Cognitive Radio. This paper provides the broader information about the research efforts in recent years regarding the Antenna Selection (AS) techniques in MIMO and its impact on the system capacity as well as the received SNR. The impact of AS on the system performance varies depending on the selection criterion, underlying space-time (ST) code and channel model. The metrics that are normally considered in the performance analysis are the 'system capacity', the 'spatial diversity gain'(or diversity order) of the system, as well as the 'loss in coding gain' due to antenna selection. The review of several antenna selection techniques for Transmit Antenna Selection (TAS) & Receive Antenna Selection (RAS) is provided with respect to different performance metrics. The issues related to closely spaced antennas such as correlated fading and mutual coupling are also discussed in the view of AS.

Abstract

The main objective of this work is to analyze the Brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive system with input shaping using classical control theory. In this paper, different values of damping ratio are used to understand the generalized drive performance. The transient response of the BLDC motor drive system is analyzed using time response analysis. The dynamic behavior and steady state performance of the BLDC motor drive system is judged and compared by its steady state error to various standard test signals. The relative stability of this drive system is determined by Bode Plot. These analysis spotlights that it is possible to obtain a finite-time setting response without oscillation in BLDC motor drive by applying input in four steps of different amplitude to the drive system. These analyses are helpful to design a precise speed control system and current control system for BLDC motor drive with fast response. The Matlab/Simulink software is used to perform the simulation.

Abstract

Ethanolic leaf extract of Erythrina varigata was carried out using soxhlet apparatus. The extract was evaluated for preliminary phytochemical studies, acute toxicity studies and hypoglycemic activity. Acute toxicity study revealed that the ethanolic leaf extract even at high dose (2000mg/ kg) produced no death and found to be safe. The hypoglycemic activity was evaluated in normal and alloxan induced diabetic mice. The chloroform fraction of the leaf extract was found to possess significant hypoglycemic activity when compared to standard Glibenclamide.

Abstract

This paper presents the simulation of orthogonal metal cutting of 6061 T6 Aluminium alloy using Hypermesh and LS-Dyna to study the effect of the edge radius on cutting forces and chip formation. The constitutive material model Elastic Plastic Hydrodynamic was used to model the work piece. The capability of this model to predict cutting forces, shear angle and chip curvature was investigated. Design of Experiments principle was used to study the effect of the parameters on cutting edge performance. The trends of the simulated results were in good agreement with the generally observed theoretical and experimental results. The model can also be used as a numerical tool for optimizing the edge radius. The effect of edge radius and other cutting conditions on the chip curl and the shear angle were also investigated.

Abstract

Indian cardamom farming in the Cardamom Hill Reserves of Kerala has been considered one of the costliest production systems. Questionnaire survey and interviews with cardamom planters between 2008 and 2013 showed that the pesticides used in cardamom production is paradoxical. The reasons are closely associated with the unscrupulous use of pesticides which wiped out the natural enemies of pests and inefficacies of pesticides that led to dose enhancement. Climatic changes along with forest degradation and removal of shade have played a considerable role for increased pesticide consumption. The current perilous situation needs critical thinking to evolve pesticide reduction strategies.

Abstract

Cryogenic treatment is a process of treating materials, at temperatures well below 0°C to achieve improved mechanical properties. Cryogenic treatment was observed to enhance the mechanical properties of various materials like tool steels, bearing materials, carbon fiber composites and copper resistance welding electrodes. Application of cryogenic treatment as a post weld treatment to weldments is a new area to be studied. In the present investigation, 2.25 Cr 1 Mo low carbon low alloy steel weldments were cryogenically treated and their mechanical behavior evaluated. Changes in microhardness, Charpy V notch toughness and changes in the microstructure were studied. The performance of as welded, tempered, long cycle cryogenic treated and tempered and long cycle cryogenic treated weldments were compared. J-integral as a measure of fracture toughness of the weldments was computed and compared. The long cycle cryogenic treatment was found to result is substantial increase in impact toughness with the marginal reduction in micro hardness. At the micro structural level, that formation of acicular ferrite, grain refinement and precipitation of alloying elements were found to be the basic mechanisms responsible for the increased impact toughness.

Abstract

Aluminium Silicon Carbide (Al.SiC) metal matrix composite (MMC) materials have a set of mechanical and physical properties that are ideally suited for applications in aerospace, automobile industries. Despite the superior set of mechanical and physical properties, the usage of MMC's in industry is still limited owing to difficulties in machining. To overcome this barrier, this paper performs a thorough study about the machinability of Al-SiC (MMC) with PCD insert tool to establish machining guidelines.The focus of the investigation is to determine the optimum machining conditions by adjusting the spindle speeds, depth of cut and feed, and observing the corresponding behaviour of cutting force, surface imperfections, power consumed, and MRR. The worn out tool is subjected to microscopic analysis to evaluate the wear on the tool.On completion of the experimental test, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to validate the results obtained and also to predict the behaviour of the system under any condition within the operating range.

Abstract

In the turning operation, chatter or vibration is a frequent problem, which affects the surface finish and tool life. In all cutting operations like turning, boring and milling vibrations are induced due to the deformation of the workpiece, this implies economical disadvantage. The main objective of the proposed work is to design damped tool holder for existing machine tools with low cost fabrication techniques. In this investigation, improvement of the damping capability of boring tool and suppression of chatter vibration using lead damper and Impact damper are analyzed. The lead damper Inertia mass of the boring tool has been Increased to suppress the chatter vibration. In impact damper kinetic energy of free mass is dissipated. Finite element analysis is performed to study dynamic behavior of composite tool holder, the effects of overhang length of boring tool with lead damper, and the effects of impact damper in boring tool was investigated.

Abstract

This article examines students’ reading habits, their preferences and trends in traditional reading, i.e. books and other printed materials in the library in the digital era. The study was carried out in a reputed public school in South India, with a well stocked library and offering digital information access and services to the students and staff. The study is based on factual data downloaded from the computerised circulation data and data collected through a questionnaire. It was found that the habit of reading printed books has not been much affected by the digital era. Providing periodic exposure to the latest books to students, involving them in book selection and other motivating practices keeps the students’ book reading habits intact.

Abstract

Toxicity of nine indigenous Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) isolates collected from Tamil Nadu, India were tested against fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda. At 30 ?g/ml concentration, two Bt isolates viz., T350 and T532 recorded 100 per cent mortality whereas isolates T527 and T532 registered 96 per cent mortality against neonate larvae of S. frugiperda in leaf dip bioassay. SDS PAGE analysis of spore crystal mixture revealed the presence of Cry1 and Cry2 proteins with visible bands at 130 kDa and 65 kDa. PCR screening results showed the presence of cry1 (cry1A, cry1Aa, cry1Ab), cry2 (cry2Aa, cry2Ab) in four isolates and vip3A genes in three isolates but cry9 gene was not present in any of the isolates tested.

Abstract

Investigations were made to study the effects of three nemato-pathogenic fungi viz. Purpureocillium lilacinum, P. lilacinum + neem cake, Pochonia chlamydosporia and Trichoderma sp. as well as two synthetic insecticides (cartap hydrochloride and carbosulfan) against the Root-knot Nematodes (RKN) of cardamom at the farmers’ fields in three locations of Idukki district, Kerala, India during 2016- 2019. Results revealed that the combined application of P. lilacinum with neem cake gave maximum reduction of typical symptoms of infestation like the leaf narrowing (6.42%) and root knot formation (1.32 nos.) followed by P. chlamydosporia with 8.04% narrowed leaves and 1.83 root knots. The application of P. lilacinum and neem cake in combination (0.82 kg/plant and 2.99) followed by P. chlamydosporia (0.71 kg/plant and 2.71 recorded highest yield and Benefit Cost Ratio, respectively). Bio-control agents are therefore efficient and environmentally safer for managing the RKN in cardamom. Future studies can be directed to focus on the compatibility and efficiency enhancement of these bio-agents with organic amendments.

Abstract

In the present study, ethyl acetate extracts of six botanicals were extracted by continuous hot percolation process in Soxhlet apparatus and evaluated to study the antifeedant, insecticidal and the growth and development inhibitory activity on second instar larvae of diamond back moth Plutella xylostella L. The results showed that the Sesbania grandiflora at 5% exhibited maximum antifeedant index (34.27%) followed by Swietenia macrophylla 5% (28.91%). Extracts of these plants were also found to be the most effective against larvae giving 76.67 and 23.33% mortality, respectively. The adult emergence was 23.33 and 26.67%, respectively with these, while developmental period did not reveal any significant differences.
